Dr Akpa Paul Hassan is a distinguished accountant and academic administrator. Prior to his appointment as the second substantive Bursar of the premier University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), he served as the Bursar of the Federal University Wukari (FUWUKARI), Taraba State. His appointment to FUWUKARI was announced in January 2020, and he completed his five-year tenure there on 4 May 2025. On 12 May 2025, he was appointed the second substantive Bursar of FUHSO by the University Governing Council.
Dr Akpa began his academic journey at the renowned Federal Polytechnic, Bida, Niger State, where he obtained both the National Diploma and the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy. He subsequently proceeded to Salem University, Lokoja, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting with honours. His pursuit of advanced knowledge led him to Nasarawa State University, Keffi, where he earned a Master’s degree in Accounting and Finance, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting.
This academic-cum-professional luminary is a Fellow of several prestigious bodies, including the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (FCNA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), the African Institute of Public Administration (FAIPA), Ghana, and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCTI). These fellowships reflect his extensive expertise in financial management and public sector accounting, spanning over two decades.Dr Akpa’s contributions to the discipline extend beyond the shores of Nigeria. He has been honoured with honorary doctorates by both the London Business School and the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in accounting and finance.
Beyond academia and administration, Dr Akpa is a respected community leader. He holds the prominent traditional title of Omachi Ata Igala Ika of the Igala Kingdom, with the salutation Waali. Without doubt, Dr Akpa possesses an intimidating academic and professional record, comparable to that of any distinguished vice-chancellor. It is the hope and expectation of the beleaguered staff of FUHSO that he will translate his impressive credentials, laurels, and wealth of experience garnered both from FUWUKARI and the private sector into tangible achievements for the University. Indeed, the Chairman and members of the FUHSO Governing Council deserve commendation for identifying and appointing a cream of seasoned administrators as principal officers, particularly in the person of the Bursar.
