Our History

The Journey so far

The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO) Library was established in 2020 and commenced operations in January 2021 at the Take-off Campus, Otada. Under the leadership of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Innocent Ujah (mni), and the University Librarian, Dr. Kathryn J. Philip. The library began with essential ICT facilities, Internet connectivity, and a modest physical space. Initially housed in a small bungalow, the library served as both an academic and administrative hub, supporting teaching, learning, and research through its book collections and electronic resources. In preparation for the University’s first National Universities Commission (NUC) Accreditation Exercise in March 2025, the University Library expanded into an adjoining building. This provided additional seating capacity, increased physical collections, and a dedicated e-Library equipped with databases such as EBSCOhost, ProQuest, Research4Life, AJOL, Pubmed, all curated on the Library Portal. The University Library houses modest volumes in health and science disciplines, alongside robust e-resources, multimedia facilities, and reliable solar-powered Internet access. Since 2021, FUHSO Library has grown in both staff strength and capacity, with all staff being trained professionals in Library and Information Science. It has introduced student and staff orientation programmes, contributed to curriculum development, and consistently supported teaching, research, academic productivity, and community services. Plans are underway for a central library at the University’s permanent site.

The Journey Continues

Under the leadership of the second and current substantive University Librarian, Dr. Taiwo Adetoun Akinde, who was appointed on the 12th of May, 2025, the FUHSO University Library was organized into key sections: the ICT Section, Reader Services Section, Technical Services Section, Serials and Documents Section, Collection Development Section and the Office of the University Librarian. Under the new leadership, the University Library is committed to achieving its mission of upholding fair and equitable resource distribution to build balanced, effective, supportive and growing collections which will address the information needs and requirements of all users and disciplines in the University at all time, and its vision of providing current and relevant information resources and technology-mediated services which will not regard the time, place and distance of the users; a well informed and motivated staff and a safe, clean and green working and learning environment! We hope to achieve this laudable mission and vision through the unrelenting support of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Ministry of Education, the University Governing Council and Management, and collaborations of sister universities and institutions, donor agencies, well meaning Nigerians, good spirited individuals and men and women of goodwill all over the world; given the unalloyed cooperation of all the staff and students of the University. We hereby welcome you to the FUHSO University Library Webpage! Your feedback will be deeply appreciated. Thank you.
The E-library is an online library that stores content digitally (as opposed to print, micro-forms or other media) and is accesible via internet. the e-library retrieves comprehensive yet accurate information that is 100% secure and virus free, delivering it instantly at the click of the mouse across the intranet. this efficient and interactive software platform, boast the most up-to-date information on every subject that is quickly retrievable by keying in some elementary fields in the search options. this eliminate the enumerable hours spent crawling search engines which more often than not spews out contradicting and unreliable information while restricting unnecessary internet access, which is difficult to control/monitor.
